Free Stroke Prevention Screenings Open to the Public

More information: (212) 263-7709

The NYU Division of Vascular Surgery holds approximately 6 free stroke prevention programs each year. These programs determine which population is at a moderate risk for stroke and ascertains which tests are best suited to identify this population.

Participants must be at least 60 years old and have at least one of the following risk factors:

  • Current smoker
  • History of high blood pressure
  • History of cardiac disease
  • History of stroke in the immediate family

The tests performed at the screenings include:

  • Measurement of blood pressure
  • Rhythm EKG
  • Modified ultrasound of the carotid arteries

All participants receive the results of their examinations at the screening. Appointments are made in advance so there is very little waiting.

The program is made available by a grant received by the Ira DeCamp Foundation.
