Thomas S. Riles, M.D.
Pioneer in Carotid Artery Surgery for Stroke Prevention and Aneurysm Repair
Experience
Dr. Riles has played a significant role in building
NYU’s reputation as a leader in the treatment of vascular diseases. Dr. Riles
has authored over 200 articles and chapters on the diagnosis and treatment of
vascular disease. He is considered one of the world’s experts on the treatment
of carotid artery disease for stroke prevention and is frequently invited to
lecture nationally and internationally. He was one of the principle
investigators in an international clinical trial that explored the use of
endografts in treating abdominal aortic aneurysms.
Dr. Riles is the Frank C. Spencer Professor of Surgery at NYU. Over his three decades at NYU, he has served as Director of the Division of Vascular Surgery, Senior Vice President for Clinical Affairs in the Office of the President and Chairman of the NYU Department of Surgery. In addition to his vascular surgery practice, Dr. Riles is the Associate Dean for Medical Education and Technology at NYU Medical Center.
Professional Leadership
In addition to his leadership positions at
NYU, Dr. Riles has been the president of the American Association of Vascular
Surgery (2002-3), president of the Peripheral Vascular Surgery Society, and
president of the New York Cardiovascular Society. He currently is a member of
the Vascular Surgery Board of the American Board of Surgery and a member of the
Committee on Resident Education for the American College of Surgeons.
Education
Dr. Riles is a graduate of Stanford University and Baylor
College of Medicine. He completed his general surgical residency training and
vascular surgery fellowship at NYU. Dr. Riles is Board Certified in Vascular
Surgery.
